What ignited your pursuit for gender equality?

Being from a developing country with so many profound issues such as violence against girls and women, female genital mutilation, child marriage, and female illiteracy, made me a huge advocate for the fundamental human rights and freedoms of girls and women. We know that political commitments are not enough and gender inequality has a negative impact not only on girls and women, but on all people socially, economically, and politically. By advocating for gender equality, I believe we can send out a strong message that women deserve the same rights, freedoms, and choices as men.

Please share your biggest wins as an advocate for gender equality.

Through my work at UN Women, my colleagues and I were able to spread the word about the UN Women campaign Generation Equality in the Arab States. We were able to engage youth leaders and gender equality advocates in the campaign. The Generation Equality campaign demands equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to sexual harassment and all forms of violence against women and girls, healthcare services that respond to their needs, and their equal participation in political life and decision making in all areas of life.

Outside of your gender equality advocacy work, what do you enjoy doing?

Traveling, learning about other cultures, and reading.
