Bio
Doreen is a young Ugandan lawyer, feminist, and human rights advocate. She advocates for the human rights of women, girls, and marginalized persons, particularly LGBTQIA+ individuals. She does this through the provision of legal aid, research, and documentation of human rights violations. She also raises awareness among LGBTQIA+ individuals about their human rights by empowering them to protect and advocate for themselves. This has strengthened her commitment to advocating for positive change in the realm of human rights. As a young advocate, Doreen believes that youth have a vital role to play in advocacy. This is underpinned by her belief that young people can contribute unique, innovative, and dynamic perspectives that can be incorporated into the creation and implementation of favorable human rights policies and regimes that are fit for purpose. Through youth engagement, young people are better equipped to counter emerging anti-rights movements and gain an understanding of digital literacy to leverage social media to drive advocacy at all levels. Doreen believes that young people should be involved in advocacy to secure the futures of current and future generations, learn from shared experiences among themselves, create sustainable networks for action mobilization, and amplify youth voices through peer-to-peer education. The Emerging Leaders Program will be a great platform for her to contribute to this noble work by providing her with access to advocacy spaces to amplify the rights and narratives of women and LGBTQIA+ individuals. Doreen’s advocacy is rooted in the protection of human rights for everyone in society, including marginalized groups. Some strategies she will use include community education campaigns to dismantle stereotypes and misconceptions and build a more empathetic society.
