Bio
Alice Kanyana is a feminist and gender equality advocate from Rwanda. She champions both gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in both virtual and physical spaces. Through her online platforms, she engages with over 43,000 followers to raise awareness and lead conversations on issues such as gender-based violence (GBV) and access to contraceptives. In her role as Programs Officer for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion at Health Development Initiative (HDI), Alice furthers her advocacy aims by working with various stakeholders, including local leaders, religious leaders, and influencers within her community. Believing that young people play a critical role in global advocacy spaces through their firsthand experiences, Alice applied for the Emerging Leaders Program to strengthen her advocacy skills and implement a project that would make a tangible difference in her community. She saw the Emerging Leaders Program as a platform to learn how to effectively plan, execute, and sustain advocacy initiatives while also receiving support in the form of mentorship and funding. Through the Emerging Leaders Program, she plans to implement impactful campaigns in the Rulindo district to address access to contraceptives, reproductive health care, and teenage pregnancy, and to transform local perceptions of gender equality.
