Caren Odanga, a Women Deliver Young Leader from Kenya, received a $5,000 seed grant from Women Deliver — made possible by Johnson & Johnson — to implement her “Building Momentum for Increased Access to Safe Abortion in Kakamega County” project. The project centered on countering barriers to safe abortion among young women between the ages of 12 and 22 through a combination of advocacy and educational activities to decrease stigma while increasing access. Though her seed grant project faced resistance and opposition by some in the community, Caren and members of the Sisari Women’s Initiative have been successful in creating structures to support advocacy work on improved universal access to safe abortion in Kakamega County. Specifically, their work directly led to the creation of new peer educators’ clubs both in schools and within the community that will continue carrying out peer to peer education on access to safe abortion and reproductive health.
