Deneka Thomas (Class of 2018) participated at the 2018 First Citizens National Poetry Slam and was crowned the National Slam Champion after performing the winning spoken word poem. In the poem, she personified a closet and gave detailed accounts of what LGBT folks experience while having to hide their identities for fear of being discriminated against, criminalized, or killed.
