Manka Mafor Awasom Fru is the founder of an NGO that works to facilitate access to healthcare for incarcerated women in country Cameroon. She holds an LLM in investment from the University of Uppsala Sweden, a published author and policy analyst. she is leading advocacy for the promotion and protection of the sexual health and reproductive rights of incarcerated females in Cameroon and creating a gender sensitive health surveillance system in Cameroonian prisons.

What ignited your pursuit for gender equality?

As an undergrad law student, frequenting prisons during internships, I came to the realization that women face two times the burden of human right abuses in prisons than their male counterparts and there exist gaps in prison administration systems that do not address the specific unique health needs of incarcerated females.

Please share your biggest wins as an advocate for gender equality.

In the last year, our team has carried out advocacy in regional prisons in Cameroon for the promotion and protection of the health rights of incarcerated women.

Outside of your gender equality advocacy work, what do you enjoy doing?

As a researcher, policy analyst and female youth advocate i enjoy consuming and creating content( through various forms of storytelling) around good governance, policy and their correlation to development and poverty alleviation.
