Hashim Hounkpatin is passionate about empowering girls and women by improving their health literacy and their overall health.
Hashim was born and raised in Benin. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Faculté des Sciences de la Santé, Université d’Abomey-Calavi. As a Physician at Hôpital Saint Luc, he is responsible for providing preventive, curative, and promotional health — including sexual and reproductive health — to adolescents, youths, and adults of both genders.
Since becoming a Young Leader, Hashim is proud to have launched Arayaa.com, a mass health literacy program for Africa that is visited by thousands of people weekly and was named by Ashoka in 2017 as one of the top 20 best innovations in Africa. Additionally, he was invited by Télévision Carrefour in Benin in 2017 to help design and implement a live health show that provides expert answers to weekly questions regarding major health problems, including sexual and reproductive health issues. As an advocate, Hashim campaigned through social and traditional media and organized a meeting with major Universal Health Coverage (UHC) stakeholders that later resulted in the government’s commitment to launching a UHC program by July 2018.
Hashim was inspired to become an advocate by Dr. Jean-Paul Dossou because he provides evidence-based actions to the community to improve access to UHC.
In his free time, Hashim enjoys traveling, reading, and blogging.
