Bio
Auramaría Escandón Bucheli was born and raised in Colombia. She graduated as a Medical Doctor from Universidad Icesi in 2018. As a Physician at Fundación Clínica Valle del Lili, Auramaría is in charge of 30 hospitalized patients a day, making sure they have their needs covered, don’t have any worsening of their clinical course, and have understood and have a way to follow the medical indications at discharge. As Founder of Ellas Icesis, she works with the other leaders to evaluate the needs of the group about the formation and which activities they want to develop in the semester for the group itself and projects with the community.
Auramaría is also a volunteer investigator at the sexual and reproductive health group at Fundación Clínica Valle del Lili.
What ignited your pursuit for gender equality?
At some point, I had to stop and think about how and why I got here. I saw myself from above and realized I quit my life because of other´s opinions. I felt limited, lacking the strength of taking control, and realized that most women have felt that way too.
Please share your biggest wins as an advocate for gender equality.
We developed an educational program of sex education with adolescents in their high school. We got them to feel part of it and created an enviroment of confidence and belonging. We empowered the community by giving them tools to organize themselves in order to keep promoting safe sexual behavior.
Outside of your gender equality advocacy work, what do you enjoy doing?
I like reading, writing, listen to music, and cooking.
