Priyesh Sharad Works with UNICEF to Capture Vital Information on Maternal and Child Health Indicators in India

share

As an intern on the “Children in Chhattisgarh” UNICEF project, Priyesh Sharad (Class of 2018) worked to catalogue all policies in Chhattisgarh, a conflict-affected state in India. His list included maternal and child indicators like the infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR), and he studied policies’ impact from 2006 to 2016 for mothers and children including pregnant women, poor classes, underprivileged and handicapped children. After compiling the data, they found that people were not receiving the benefits under these policies due to an array of factors, such as lack of knowledge. UNICEF later published a report featuring the data of all the latest indicators such as IMR, MMR in the five-yearly journal of UNICEF and launched it on a public stage to reach a large audience.
