About the Women Deliver 2023 Conference (WD2023):

Women Deliver Conferences are known for bringing together advocates from around the world and galvanizing momentum toward collective action for girls and women. As one of the largest and most impactful convenings in the gender equality space, Women Deliver’s Conferences provide a forum to fuel the movement, improve policies and programs, and set the stage for political and financial commitments that advance gender equality and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR).

With more than 8,000 advocates from over 165 countries on-site, and more than 200,000 people joining around the world through satellite events and the virtual program, the Women Deliver 2019 Conference (WD2019) was the largest convening for gender equality in the world. The Conference connected grassroots advocates and decision-makers, fueled over USD $1 Billion in global and country-level investments and  shined a global spotlight on the importance of gender equality. WD2019 saw political and financial commitments made from world leaders, alliances made between advocates, and new evidence shared.

Between July and October 2020, Women Deliver conducted an online survey to better understand the impact and outcomes of WD2019 one year after the Conference. We learned that 85% of respondents used a skill they gained at the Conference in their day-to-day work, 90% of respondents have leveraged a connection they made at the Conference to enhance or support their work, and 78% of respondents believe that the Conference has already had a measurable impact. We are committed to building on the momentum of WD2019 and are working to lay the groundwork for an even more accessible and inclusive Conference in 2023.

The vision for the Women Deliver 2023 Conference (WD2023) is driven by survey data from WD2019 participants, a global consultation with 4,500+ advocates (70% from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)), lessons from how the COVID-19 pandemic has shaken and re-shaped the world we operate in, and transformative learnings from racial reckonings shifting old structures across sectors.

Taking place in Kigali, Rwanda from 17-20 July the Women Deliver 2023 Conference will connect with other key policy moments and center the key issues of our time, and promote a robust civic space for feminist action, organizing, and mobilization. WD2023 will serve as an important civil society driven accountability mechanism following a number of commitments that have been made around gender equality at international fora, including the Nairobi Summit, Generation Equality Forum (GEF), the G7 Summit, and the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26), among others. The Women Deliver 2023 Conference is well positioned to ensure that commitments made in the coming years result in gender-transformative policy change.

Women Deliver believes that gender equality will only be achieved once all people have equal access to power, dignity, justice, rights, health, and opportunities, including to network, develop skills, share knowledge, access funding opportunities, and participate in conversations that contribute to global agenda setting, such as WD2023. To this end, Women Deliver is deeply committed to developing an accessible and inclusive platform, both in-person and virtually, to ensure that underrepresented populations and advocates representing the intersectional identities of girls and women, particularly those living in LMICs are meaningfully engaged.

Summary of the Position:

In this new role, the Director, Conference & Convenings will oversee all events for Women Deliver with an emphasis on serving as Senior Focal for the Women Deliver 2023 Conference. The Director will play a leading role in convening diverse communities in an innovative and inspiring space for dialogue, evidence and solution sharing, accountability, and action to ignite collaboration and a bolder movement toward gender equality and improved health and wellbeing of girls and women. The Director will oversee the activities leading up to, during, and after the Conference taking place in 2023, on- and off-site.

The Director will demonstrate both exceptional strategic vision and project management skills. They will motivate a team of experts to see the various elements of a weeklong event as a cumulative whole with the potential to profoundly affect the global agenda and drive progress for girls and women. The Director will play a key role in advancing the advocacy agenda of Women Deliver and the Conference within the host country. They must have the ability to challenge the “way we have always done it” as well as to learn from the lessons of the five previous Women Deliver Conferences.

The Director will manage an internal Conference Team of 5 professionals (the Manager, Conference & Convenings and 4 temporary Senior Associates), and support management of the Communications Manager, Conference, including overseeing large outside vendors for production and communications.

The Director will serve as the overall project manager for the Conference, including leading on core operations and logistics.

The Director will report to the President/CEO who will play a large role in supporting on the external partnership needs related to the Conference and relationships development with the Host Country, Advisory Group, and Regional Convening Partners.

Accountabilities:

  • Serve as both internal and external representative and lead for the Women Deliver 2023 Conference.
  • Create and foster a strategic vision of the Conference, Conference legacy, and connect the parts of the Conference to ensure team members understand their role and their contribution to the whole Conference.
  • Manage up and across functional teams to achieve conference goals and objectives.
  • Manage Women Deliver Conference Team.
  • Establish and manage process and milestone timelines.
  • Regularly communicate deadlines and interdependency to ensure established milestones are met and opportunities for innovation are seized.
  • Work closely with:
    • Manager, Conference & Convenings – who serves as Program & Content focal overall for WD2023.
    • Senior Associates (4 positions), Conference & Convenings – who serve as focals for Plenary, Concurrent, Global Dialogue & Virtual Program.
    • Markham Group – external agency supporting Conference logistics, protocol, and vendor management.
    • Edelman – external agency supporting Conference communications and media – in partnership with the Director of Communications and the Communications Team.
    • Finance & Administration Team to track and manage conference budget.
    • Policy & Advocacy Team to develop and implement our policy and advocacy goals leading up to and during the Conference.
    • Youth Engagement Team to develop and implement our meaningful youth engagement and co-leadership goals leading up to and during the Conference.
    • External Relations Team to secure donor funding, sponsorships, and steward partner relationships – in partnership with the President/CEO.
  • Oversee and facilitate planning meetings of the Conference Advisory Group in partnership with Manager, Conference & Convenings.
  • Serve as the liaison for host country activities with government, private sector, NGOs, and CSOs.
  • Oversee and facilitate Generation Equality Forum commitments made related to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility across all of WD2023.
  • Oversee and facilitate Generation Equality Forum commitments made to hosting GEF and other key alliance partners.
  • Oversee and facilitate special relations and events of WD2023 – including such examples as Ministerial Forum and Parliamentarian Forum.
  • Ensure the distinct Program Elements of the Conference – as co-created and co-designed by the Advisory Group, staff, and partners are translated to Concurrent Program, Plenary Program, Global Dialogue, Regional Convening Partner, Virtual Program, Youth Zone, Networking Forums, and other strategic program elements.
  • Troubleshoot and handle any problems, applying quick solutions to sudden challenges that may arise leading up to and through WD2023.
  • Inspire and engage team to meet tight deadlines.
  • Oversee the support of Convenings across the organization (outside of WD2023) related to key policy windows such as CSW, HLPF, UNGA, COP, IDG, IYD, among others.
  • Serves as an organizational leader by contributing to our Transformation and supporting the general team health and executive management of WD.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Skills, Education, and Knowledge:

  • BA/BS required; Master’s highly preferred.
  • 10-12 years of work experience, ideally with an emphasis in global development in a project management, strategic communications, or high-level stakeholder role.
  • Experience managing a team
  • Ability to set a clear vision, rally people around that vision, and operationalize that vision
  • Strong organization and project management skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and work independently while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated budget management and financial skills.
  • Ability to apply strategic and creative thinking, while being persistent, motivated, proactive, energetic, and detail-oriented.
  • Superb English language writing and editing skills; professional communication and presentation skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with diverse audiences including governments, donors, and civil society ensure productive partnerships.
  • Ability to design and implement creative, analytical approaches to improve programs and projects, and to be flexible to change should these approaches need course correcting.
  • Ability to persist through challenges and finds energy in the face of obstacles
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, and adept in creating professional PowerPoint presentations.
  • Experience using project management online tools, including preferred knowledge of Asana and/or Salesforce.
  • French or Spanish language skills are a plus.
  • Experience lived or worked on the African continent preferred – with an emphasis in experience working with the African Union and/or national level government officials and ministers.
  • Experience within the fields of movement building, women’s leadership, SRHR, or gender equality preferred.
  • Ability to travel as needed to/from Conference host location – in Rwanda and as needed to the Regional Convening Partner locations in South Africa and Colombia (with others to be added).
  • Must be able eligible to work in the United States, without sponsorship.
