FAQs: 2019 Conference
What is the Women Deliver Conference?
The Women Deliver 2019 Conference is the largest gathering on girls’ and women’s health, rights, and wellbeing. The conference presents new knowledge, promotes solutions, and serves as a fueling station for advocates working to achieve a more gender equal world.
What is the focus of the conference?
The exact themes of the conference are still developing, but overall, WD2019 will focus on gender equality and how girls and women are drivers of progress. The conference will hone in on solutions and drive investments in girls’ and women’s health (including maternal, sexual, and reproductive health and rights), education, environment, political participation, economic empowerment, and access to resources.
Who will be attending the conference?
The Women Deliver 2019 Conference will bring over 6,000 world leaders, influencers, government officials, civil society representatives, private sector leaders, young people, advocates, academics, activists, and journalists from more than 150 countries to Vancouver, Canada, 3-6 June 2019.
Where will the conference be held?
The Women Deliver 2019 conference will be hosted in the award-winning Vancouver Convention Centre, a LEED® Platinum-certified, state-of- the-art facility on the waterfront in beautiful downtown Vancouver.
When will registration open?
Registration will open about one year before the event —early summer of 2018.
What will it cost to attend?
The registration fee will vary according to registration type. In years past, the cost has been between $400-900. There will be early bird rates.
Are there discounts/scholarships?
Yes, for select groups. Young people, large groups, and participants requiring financial assistance may receive discounted or fully-compensated rates. Women Deliver has in the past spend 30-40% of our conference budget on supporting travel. For the 2016 conference, we had more than 5,000 applications for 700 scholarships. Subscribe to the Women Deliver newsletter for news about the scholarship application process.
What was the selection process of the venue like?
Starting with the initial Request for Information (RFI) issued to more than 50 conference venues in September 2016, Women Deliver undertook a very careful working process to select the destination for the 2019 Women Deliver 5th Global conference.
The process included a rigorous analysis of responses to both the RFI and the subsequent Request for Proposals, which considered availability of dates that did not coincide with any major religious holiday, venue, and hotel requirements to host a conference of 6,000 participants, and accessibility for our participants, including airline service and visa regulations. Due to the topics addressed in the Women Deliver Global Conference, a favorable host country environment that supports the health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women, and does not seek to dictate or censure any topics to be discussed in the conference, is also of utmost importance. 6 destinations and 4 countries made it to the final rounds of selection in early 2017. These included destinations in the global south, however some venue facilities available lacked some aspects which would make delivery of essential conference elements difficult. In the final analysis, Vancouver, Canada, was selected as the strongest overall proposal and the best home for WD2019.
A key lesson learned from this process is that for a conference of 6,000 participants, the options of venues with sufficient facilities are rather limited, and these are booked well in advance. For this reason, we are starting the selection process for WD2022 even earlier, and we hope this will provide us with more options in the global south that could be considered.
Why did Women Deliver choose Canada for the host country?
In addition to having the technical capacity to host a conference of our size, Canada is one of the countries in the world that consistently prioritizes and invests in girls and women. Many venues and host countries were under consideration in the selection process, but these shared values make Canada an especially appropriate choice.
How can I participate if I cannot travel to Vancouver?
Women Deliver will be holding a virtual conference, with streaming of plenary session, selected concurrent sessions, and specific programming for a digital audience. Those who cannot attend in person will be able to participate remotely.
