Ãlysse Marcellin Mobilizes LGBT Community to Protest Discriminatory Laws

share

Élysse Marcellin (Class of 2018) co-organized and facilitated a LGBT community mobilization initiative in response to the Jones vs. GoRTT court case challenging sections 13 and 16 of the Sexual Offenses Act of Trinidad and Tobago, which criminalizes same-sex relations. This mobilization effort encouraged members of the community to come out and making themselves more visible to protest the laws. Following a first round of deliberations, a judge ruled that these legal provisions were unconstitutional, which led to a groundswell of activism. Élysse is subsequently planning more events around IDAHOBIT and Pride Month.
